Amrita Thomas, an architect from Madras, India, brings over 14 years of professional experience in interior and furniture design. Graduating from CEPT University, Ahmedabad, she honed her craft under esteemed mentors of Indian design. Following a brief tenure at T.U. Delft in the Netherlands, Amrita embarked on her design journey in Chennai, her hometown.
Amrita co-founded ALARA in 2017, seamlessly blending her architectural background and interior expertise. With a focus on creating transformative spaces that balance aesthetics and function, her designs reflect a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation. She actively collaborates with local artisans and kaarigars, advocating the use of indigenous techniques and materials. By highlighting traditional craftsmanship in her projects, she not only adds a distinctive flair to her designs but also contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage.
Her meticulous attention to detail and dedication to understanding her clients' aspirations allow her to curate personalized spaces that exceed expectations. Amrita's exceptional talent has garnered recognition, with her projects being featured in prestigious publications such as Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, and Vogue.

Crafting a modern yet cozy sanctuary for a London family with roots in Chennai, Amrita designed a charming home away from home. The living space exudes minimalism, where a muted colour palette is tastefully highlighted by rugged finishes and polished accents by Alara. Utilizing statement pieces from Alara’s East African inspired Muundo collection, the interiors of the space are enriched with warmth and textural play.

A collection of statement pieces imbued with rich East African influences, chiseled textures, as well as organic forms, 'Muundo' is a definitive new step in Alara's journey in interior styling. A collaboration between Amrita Thomas and Vaishnovi Reddy of Gunava Design, Muundo features a selection of seating, tables and accessories that are a study in simplicity and handcraft.
Muundo draws inspiration from nature, its eclectic shapes and forms, and East African tribal design that embraces nature's playful, unique and graceful facets. Juxtaposing undulating ripples, curved silhouettes and asymmetrical forms with contemporary finesse and poise, the handcrafted collection celebrates soft, earthy design and the beauty of imperfection.
The striking Bisa Chair from ALARA’s East African inspired Muundo collection combines style with an easy, laid-back sensibility reminiscent of Pierre Jenneret’s iconic
Kangaroo Chair in the living room. A stunning single seater that is elevated by chiselled detailing on its sides, Bisa fits elegantly into artful living spaces, adding personality and earthy richness.
Simplicity takes centre stage in the dining room, where the attention is drawn by the dramatic Tom Dixon light fixture and the beautiful Kanai Dining Chairs.
Craftsmanship with gravitas, Kanai is a sculptural dining chair replete with minute detailing. A chiselled, textured back; understated modern wings; strong, sharp lines and tasteful contrasting rounded edges come together in a clean, chic design that exemplifies pure craftsmanship.
